Choosing Between Patio Doors and Bi-Fold Doors

Open sliding doors

When deciding between a sliding patio door and a bi-fold door, there are several key considerations that can help you determine the best fit for your space.

Considerations – Patio Doors or Bi-Fold Doors

Opening Size

Bi-fold doors offer a major advantage when it comes to fully opening up the room — they can open up to 90% of the aperture, creating a seamless connection to your garden. In contrast, patio doors generally open between 50% and 65%, providing a more modest opening.

Ventilation

For flexible ventilation, patio doors are a winner. You can slide them open just enough to let in a breeze, whereas bi-fold doors typically require at least one sash to be opened, depending on the design.

Uninterrupted Views

If maximising the view is your priority, a patio door may be the better choice. With large, uninterrupted panes of glass, they offer a more panoramic outlook compared to bi-fold doors, which include multiple framed sections.

Open In or Out?

Most bi-fold doors are designed to open outwards. This avoids bringing rainwater inside the home — a practical benefit in the UK climate.

Clear Space Required

Bi-fold doors require clear space around them to operate. Depending on the configuration, the door leafs may stack to one side or both, and can open inward or outward. Just remember: furniture and pots might need to be moved for the doors to open fully.

Traffic Door Option

Some bi-fold door designs feature a traffic door — a single, independently operated leaf that works like a regular back door. This is especially handy when you want to nip outside without opening the entire door set.

Threshold Considerations

Flush thresholds are aesthetically pleasing, but they offer less weather protection. Bi-fold systems often come with up to four threshold options, balancing ease of access with draft and weather resistance.

Tip: Think about exposure to the elements before choosing a flush threshold.
